Ocotlán de Morelos
%951 / Pop 15,000 / Elev 1500m
Ocotlán de Morelos is a town of fine art, esoteric pottery and a dense, industrious Friday market. The art is courtesy of homegrown artist Rodolfo Morales (1925–2001), who turned his international success to the area’s benefit by setting up the Fundación Cultural Rodolfo Morales (www.fcrom.org.mx), which has done marvelous renovation work on local churches and promotes the area’s arts, heritage, environment and social welfare.
The pottery was put on the international map by the Aguilar family, a quartet of talented sisters who pioneered a style of sculpture captured in unusually beautiful clay figurines reflecting religion, Frida Kahlo and Day of the Dead iconography.
Most visitors come to Ocotlán on Friday, when its big spirited covered market takes over the central plaza and its surroundings.
